Embryo transfer in horses

Embryo transfer in horses

Embryo transfer (ET) techniques are more and more common these days. By using ET in competition horses it is possible for the mare to have a career in sport and at the same time reproduce herself. Mares with difficult pregnancies are able to reproduce easily by using an acceptor mare. One mare can also have more than one foal during one season. In embryo transfer the embryo is collected from de uterus by flushing, 6,5 to 8 days after fertilization/insemination. If the embryo needs to be frozen, the collection takes place at day 6,5 to 7. If the transfer is fresh we collect at day 7 to 8. Frozen embryos can be stored as long as necessary and thawed when needed. The percentage of pregnancies with frozen embryos is not as high as it is with fresh transfers.

Cryolab Eersel offers the possibility to freeze and store embryos for transfer. For more information, please contact Dr. Maarten Kappen, 0031497518000.
